Start a SMART Resolution

Half the world makes resolutions.

Successful people set goals that are SMART — specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. Here are some SMART resolutions:

BAD: I resolve to lose 15 pounds in the next three months.

WHY: It’s not specific. How will you lose the weight?

Likely by doing two things:
1. Exercise regularly
2. Eat less fatty food

GOOD: You need to create two resolutions:
1. I resolve to walk for 30 minutes during my lunch hour every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 90 days starting this coming Monday.
2. I resolve to not eat dessert after dinner every Sunday through Thursday for one year starting next Sunday.

Successful people are more specific about their resolutions, and take small steps toward their goals.

Start small!

Want to do 40 pushups per day? Start with a small, doable goal like 5 or 10 per day.

Wish you would read more books? Ease into it by reading just two pages every night before bed.

Want to find your chi? Meditate for one minute each morning when you first wake up. After a month, set a new resolution for two minutes every morning.

Build the habit first. Focus on the results later.
